What is the methodology a self-directed learner use to learn a second language?

I need to find downloadable doents which describe the way a self-directed learner learn a second language -not interested in pronounciation aspect-. I suppose that they start with short sentences, whose structures(syntax) are as similar as possible to their first language ... but I must refer to some previous scientific publications
