How can I use an existing 8" insulated chimney on a wood stove with a 6" connection?

The existing stainless steel double wall chimney presently starts at the ceiling of the main floor, through the second floor, attic and roof. there is a single wall adaptor to 6" at the ceiling. I don't feel it's safe to use the adaptor and single wall down to the stove. What is proper?
